While India promptly stepped aside and called the police, Darla stood by with the car keys in her hand, fighting temptation. She knew she shouldn’t go digging through the car, but the keys were right there in her hand. Once again, curiosity got the best of her—Darla unlocked the car and opened the passenger’s side door.

The car was cluttered with sand and beach towels. There were some leftover fast-food bags on the floor and some empty soda cans. Receipts were strewn all over the floor and something had stained the backseat. Darla looked closer and determined it was ketchup. While there was a lot of stuff scattered about, it was all typical things found in a young person’s car, so Darla kept looking. She checked under the visors, but there was no paperwork or anything leading to Isaac’s disappearance. Darla didn’t want to disturb anything else, so she started to back out of the car, but then her eyes fell on the front seat.

In the seat was a paperback book, face down. She picked it up and turned it over as she stood upright. The photograph on the cover was of a large alligator with its mouth wide open.

“Whoa,” she said, finding it far too ironic that Isaac would have a book on alligators in his car when everyone was worried that an alligator might have gobbled him up.

A History of Alligators in the Carolinas was the name of the book, and she almost missed the most important part—the author. It was Mundle.

“Oh wow…” Darla said, opening the book to the title page where she saw Professor Mundle had scribbled a note to Isaac.

Isaac, I do hope this helps with your field research this term! Best of luck – Professor Mundle

What sort of research was Isaac doing? Had he started his research with alligators? Maybe that’s when one of them bit off his hand… Questions flew through Darla’s mind, and she needed to find the answers.

India stepped toward her. “Just got off the phone. Officer Bright is on the way with the crime scene unit. She said not to touch…anything…”

India stopped speaking when she saw what was in Darla’s hand. Darla quickly shut the book and plastered on a smile. Darla was familiar with police etiquette, but she’d let her curiosity get the best of her—again. Of course, her heart was in the right place, even if she got in over her head sometimes. She just wanted to know what had happened to Isaac. It wasn’t good for Tamara to be worrying so much. Darla sighed as she put the book on the seat. For a moment, she’d let herself think she was an investigator. She was actually more of a snoop, but she didn’t want to admit that.

“Oops,” Darla said as she had known perfectly well she shouldn’t have gone into the car. “My bad.”

“Oh look, a cellphone!” India exclaimed, immediately reaching into the car and ignoring the very thing she had just warned Darla not to do. The phone was on the floorboard on the passenger’s side.
